"As an educator, I believe that every student should be given the opportunity to learn. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere in lessons, where students are able to express themselves and their opinions, and can learn and progress to the best of their ability. I push my students to improve and develop both as musicians and as individuals.
Lessons are student centred. Every student is an individual and lessons should reflect this. I feel that the teacher should always be at least two or three steps ahead of the student. Therefore, I ensure that my lessons are planned in advance and provide a solid foundation of musical knowledge.
I encourage students to think for themselves so that they can take responsibility for their own learning. I've found that this helps the student become more determined to do well in lessons, and aids in developing the student's musical understanding and expression. As an individual, the student will become more confident in their own ability, and develop interpersonal skills as we work together to learn new things. This makes learning even more enjoyable.
As musicians, we need to feel we are and can be creative and I believe this creativity should be encouraged from the very beginning of learning to play an instrument. I incorporate at least one creative aspect in each lesson.
I think that the teacher and the student should be a team, built on mutual respect. If the student feels that he or she is part of a team, that there is someone there to rely on when struggling, motivation and determination to do well increases. My motivation comes from watching my students improve. I also really love the feeling I get when we are working hard on something together, and the 'lightbulb moment' strikes.
The role of the teacher is that of a guide: someone who you trust to get you to where you want or need to be. I feel that each teacher has different qualities which makes their teaching method unique. I am encouraging and patient with every student. Lessons should be enjoyed, and I've found that a sense of humour helps!"
